Wiskey in the new world is corn liquor?
Scotch Whisky and Irish Whiskey (note that Scotch whisky has no "e") traditionally use malted barley as the primary grain. In the new world (US %26amp; Canada) whiskey can and is made from a number of grains including barely, corn, wheat, rye etc. While hard to find these days there is a class of whiskey called "corn" whiskey where the percentage of corn used in the mash bill is very high. More commonly though, corn is used as the primary ingredient in Bourbons. In fact, to be callled Bourbon, the mash bill (recipe) must contain at least 51% corn. However, most notable Bourbon producers use other grains as well. While not nearly as popular these days, rye whiskey was very common in the early part of the 20th century and those were likley to contain little or no corn. Outside of bourbons and Tennessee Sour Mash whiskeys corn may or may not be used at all and often the mash bill is entirely from other grains. Canadian whisky (again not the lack of "e") is also often made primarily from corn, but this can be deceptive. Many Canadian whiskys also have a high component of rye as well as various other neutral grain spirits. This is not bad, just a stylistic choice. Price will "usually" dictate how much neutral grain spirit is used to lengthen the blend. And this is also not to say that some American whiskey's don't do this as well.
Reply:Whisky (or whiskey) is the name for a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from grains and are subsequently aged in oak casks. The grains used to make various types of whisky include barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize/corn.
Reply:Scotch and Irish immigrants who settled first Pennsylvania and the Kentucky used Rye %26amp; Barley to make their brew in the old country. After coming to america the cheaper and more advailable corn made a switch in the ingredients but not the quality of the final product.
Reply:Bourbon is made from at least 50% corn and the rest malted barley, rye or wheat. Corn whisk(e)y is at least 80% corn.
Reply:Well whiskey is not made in England, it's made in Scotland and Ireland and can be made from Barley, Wheat or Rye (or a combination of the three).
Reply:the present day whiskey that is made from corn is bourbon,( jack daniels , jim beam) if you look on the label it will probably say somewhere "sour mash whiskey" that's corn liquor.
