Sometime in late November, your friend exclaims, "I'm sick of hearing about these Pilgrims all the time..."

(..."Why should I care about them?" Which of the following would be an accurate answer? PLEASE HELP!!!!)

a.Wait just a minute. Those Pilgrims established the first settlement in the English colonies in North America (NA)!

b.Tuxedos were invented because of those black and white outfits they wore...(I'm guessing that this probably won't be the answer)

c.That Mayflower Compast they made was the first Constitution ever written in NA and it was similar to the later US Constitution in many ways.

d.Are you kidding me? Half of them died the first winter and the rest still stayed. How often do you find idealism like that?

I think the answer might be "A", but I want other people's opinions.

Sometime in late November, your friend exclaims, "I'm sick of hearing about these Pilgrims all the time..."
A. is not correct. The first English settlement was Roanoke in 1585. It failed. The second was at Jamestown in 1607 and it was not settled by the Pilgrims. This one succeeded. The Pilgrims showed up in 1620, so they were not thefirst English settlers.

B. is not correct. Obviously.

C. is not correct. The Mayflower Compact was a written document and a forerunner to the Constitution. But it is very short. It is as follows:

"The Mayflower Compact

We whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc.

Having undertaken, for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith and Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the First Colony in the Northern Parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God and one of another, Covenant and Combine ourselves together into a Civil Body Politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute and frame such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Cod, the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France and Ireland the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Domini 1620."

You can see that it is not much like the Constitution.

D. must be correct by elimination. And it is. The second source shows that half the population did die in the first winter. The rest did stay.

I am sorry to say this, but the history teacher is wrong. When I thought to answer this one, I originally thought C. was correct. But doing a little research, I found it must be D.
Reply:It is B DUH. Haha, j/k. The answer is C. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in 1607. The Pilgrims came over and settled at Plymouth several years later. The answer D is refering to Jamestown and the winter they mention was called the Starving Time. B is just wrong, funny, but wrong. That leaves C, they did est. the Mayflower Compact, it was the first written in the New World and it did relate to the Constitution. They did this because they needed and wanted to establish rules for the colony, especially after the debacle at Jamestown.
Reply:D is closest. Jamestown had been established in Virginia in 1607, thirteen years before the Pilgrims reached Massachusetts and the Mayflower Compact was an agreement for them to combine together to make just and equal laws. The Constitution is a framework for a government. The Mayflower Compact, while it was important in that they established themselves as the lawgivers, doesn't describe the organization of government in detail.
