What is it with you European Americans? One lady was bragging her?

When America was "founded" it really wasn't lost. The TRUE Americans were the various American Indian tribes who already inhabited the land and even showed the settlers how to live off it. In essence it's just another false claim in this country's tainted history.

Martin family history?
I'm trying to research if i'm related to the Sussana (North) Martin that was involved with the Salem Witch Trials. Interesting stuff...She was married to George, son of Christopher Martin and Marie Prower. Needing help finding out who's Christophers Father. I can find out that Christopher wasn't a very nice man, and that he was in charge of getting supplies for a trip on the Mayflower. My paternal line is Dean - Frank - Charles - Asa - Sylvester - Seth - Seth - Ephriam. Also could use help finding more on that line too. Most of my family was from Grafton, NH and Rehopboth/Swansea Mass.

WHY is it that the US thinks that it is the most powerful/wonderful nation on the face of the earth?
As someome who was born here in the US (actually my genes go back itteally to the Mayflower), Why should we feel superioer to all others in the world? Does this sounf like Germany 1938?

Well, we are the world's superpower both militarily and economically, but we should use that power responsibly instead of arrogantly, otherwise we will lose it. That is why the British empire fell, because it overstepped its bounds.

We can travel from one end of our country to another. Without needing travel documents. We as Americans know we have rights. Know that our fore fathers, fought and died for them. I am always happiest when I return home.

Don't ask me why, but as a child I always believed that the Pilgrims' ship (the Mayflower) was some sort of cruise ship. Maybe I was sleeping during class but I truly believed the Pilgrims sailed from Europe to Plymouth rock on a ship the size of the Queen Mary 2. Moreover, I pictured the first Thanksgiving as this catered in-door resort banquet with sumptuous turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and plenty of pumpkin pie.

We noticed that she'd talk about the people in the pictures as being in "the black and white days". I told her that my great-grandmother (in a picture) looked like my sister. "But Aunt Janie is in color," she commented. I thought that sounded odd. When her grandparents came to visit, she asked them about something when they were in the black and white days. It hit me that she really thought that people were in black and white back then. I told her that people had color back then, only the cameras couldn't make color. She got really upset -- blinking and trembling. It was like I had told her the world was only in her imagination.

Unfortunately, I thought that they were called the "Right Brothers" because they were the first people to be "right" about how to fly. Another question with genealogy. When I was in high school I lived with a genealogist. She helped take care of me. Anyways, I really didn't pay much attention but she told my dad's side, the last name, she traced them to them Mayflower. That were relatives. I never asked any questions or got paperwork but it explained what my grandfather said to me. Anyways I moved after high school and she moved to another state. We lost contact.
Another one of my releatives either got paper work from the archives or had a genealogist do the tree.
Anyways the results say two different things. I'm having my relative send me the copies.
I think I already found the error but I'm waiting for the copies of the papers to be sent. My relatives paper list the wrong Charles and that is not my gg grandmothers name. Also the newpaper article which has been passed down the famliy conderdicks this too.

Yes, it is common for genealogists to have different information. Sometimes it is caused by misinterpreting information, and sometimes it is because one researcher doesn't have the sources another researcher has.
The best thing to do is to verify the sources of all information. As you say, you think you've found the error. When you correct it, be sure to cite sources to back up your correction. Know that primary sources (such as deeds and marriage licenses) are superior to newspaper articles or what someone remembers what someone else said.
Reply:Conflicting results is almost standard in genealogy. When it is glaring, it is easily seen. The problem can be when people don't SEE or realize the issue, and just accept someone else's work, without verifying it. Sadly, this is even more common with the internet, when people are just THRILLED TO see someone else has "done" the work, copy a whole database, then pass it to the next person.
Many people are insulted, if you question the source of their conclusion. Good researchers are happy to say what record they used to "prove" the research. Different types of sources vary in how reliable they are. A court document is more likely accurate than a biography, for instance. Or, someone takes the easy route (like a published book), and makes no effort to see if the book is accurate. In early days, it was more common to use the same name in a family, and have 3 or 4 Charles.. and it can be hard to sort which one belongs to the record. Even well known genealogists can be lazy or wrong, as I learned on one of my lines. And she was a professional.
It really taught me a lot to see the contradiction, and work it through.
The other frequent pitfall is new researchers, who take family tradition as gospel. Many researchers are more concerned with finding a prestigious line, than being accurate. And very insulted if you see the mistake.
Anytime someone asks you "what is your source for that?", be happy, not insulted. Comparing notes (especially in disputed conclusions) is a great check and balance.

Another one of my releatives either got paper work from the archives or had a genealogist do the tree.
Anyways the results say two different things. I'm having my relative send me the copies.
I think I already found the error but I'm waiting for the copies of the papers to be sent. My relatives paper list the wrong Charles and that is not my gg grandmothers name. Also the newpaper article which has been passed down the famliy conderdicks this too.

Yes, it is common for genealogists to have different information. Sometimes it is caused by misinterpreting information, and sometimes it is because one researcher doesn't have the sources another researcher has.
The best thing to do is to verify the sources of all information. As you say, you think you've found the error. When you correct it, be sure to cite sources to back up your correction. Know that primary sources (such as deeds and marriage licenses) are superior to newspaper articles or what someone remembers what someone else said.
Reply:Conflicting results is almost standard in genealogy. When it is glaring, it is easily seen. The problem can be when people don't SEE or realize the issue, and just accept someone else's work, without verifying it. Sadly, this is even more common with the internet, when people are just THRILLED TO see someone else has "done" the work, copy a whole database, then pass it to the next person.
Many people are insulted, if you question the source of their conclusion. Good researchers are happy to say what record they used to "prove" the research. Different types of sources vary in how reliable they are. A court document is more likely accurate than a biography, for instance. Or, someone takes the easy route (like a published book), and makes no effort to see if the book is accurate. In early days, it was more common to use the same name in a family, and have 3 or 4 Charles.. and it can be hard to sort which one belongs to the record. Even well known genealogists can be lazy or wrong, as I learned on one of my lines. And she was a professional.
It really taught me a lot to see the contradiction, and work it through.
The other frequent pitfall is new researchers, who take family tradition as gospel. Many researchers are more concerned with finding a prestigious line, than being accurate. And very insulted if you see the mistake.
Anytime someone asks you "what is your source for that?", be happy, not insulted. Comparing notes (especially in disputed conclusions) is a great check and balance.

After the Idol last night they aired a new show; "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?"
It was pretty good show I thought! Does anyone feel similiar to me?? I wouldn't have had a chance on there. I am NOT smarter then a 5th grader ;-).. allthough the "Mayflower" was an easy one!

Moving companies?
Does anyone have any moving experiences with the Mayflower moving company or have anyone that they can recommend, we are moving from AZ to ID......good, bad experiences??

Mayflower is not bad; I have used them and a couple others. The most important thing when picking a company is find out how they are insured and how your stuff will be handled and moved. I also make sure they do background checks on their movers. Keep all your information about the company with you, have all of their numbers, and a copy of your contract and item list! I would number your boxes and make a list of what is in each box. This way it makes it easier to spot if something is missing. I have had this happen. The only other issue that I have ever had with a moving company is the time issue. Make sure they are very clear on when your stuff will be there and make sure they give you a date or a one or two date range. Another company that I used was United Van Lines and they were pretty good. I really have no complaints about them. They arrived pretty much on time which was nice. Here is their website:

My floor is a MESS help?
we are in the process of sprucing up our kitchen.we have discovered not 1 but 3 layers of floor covering. one sections has been proven to be chip board. need ideas on what to do and best for covering. think the cover now came on the mayflower

Take off the three layers down to the basic floor, put on a smooth filler, and after things have settled, lay linoleum.
Reply:Just completely take up all 3 layers %26amp; start fresh put down new sub floor %26amp; then put leveler down if needed in the kitchen I'd say put down cermic tile it's time consuming but when it's done you'll love it %26amp; it's easy 2 take care of.
Reply:you can buy a floor leveler product to fill "pot holes" put down underlayment on top of all three layers, if you would like to, then new floor covering.
Reply:pull up old floring down to where its the same level as the rooms attached ( eliminate trip factors). put down new underlayment(1/4" luan) and staple it down using at least 1 1/2" staples, 1 every 6 square inchs(a 6" sqaure would take four staples), sand all adjoining seams flat fill in all cracks and divots from pounding in staples that freaked, run your hand across entire floor surface any staples that are sticking up need to be beaten down fil those divots also let dry and sand smooth. sweep floor then vacuum 3 -4 times . this may seem excessive but a grain of sand under vinyl or god forbid peel and stick or vct tile will look like a mountain. after thats done roll out vinyl cut into place and with a roll of duct tape tape off all outside corners in both directions also tape any other stress point ( this minimizes the chance of ripping your sheet goods). then fold it back in half and spread a thinset type glue let dry til tacky and roll sheet over the glue and with a 2 ft piece of 2x4 w/ towel wrapped around it w/ pressure slide it back and fourth across the floor pushing out all the air bubbles then again goin in a 90 degree from that direction . fold back other half and repeat. make sure when done you put new boarder down either new base boards( old ones get messed up in demo) or cove base and put bead of caulk around doorways. this keeps it down and wont let it curl up down the road. other people have answered using the peel and stick tile. as a pro i refuse to install them. they dont adhere properly and shift. also. when you mop your floor the cleaning agents seep into the cracks and interact w/ the adhesive and the next thing you know youve got ugly black gooy lines on the edges of your tile. for the money vinyl is the cheapest way to go and easiest to replace. cermic tile even w/ backer board over wood cracks and chipped tiles are expensive to replace. also, depending on traffic, the glaze gets worn off and you have to pay to have your floor re-glazed. vct tile leave that for over concrete applications. then theres wood floors,you could go w/ laminates or the solid 3/4" planks, but then in time the floor has to be refinished due to traffic, sliding chairs, stains etc. re finishing can cost as much as replacing vinyl. the choice is up to you i'd go w/ the vinyl, most are no wax ,just damp mop.

Here is my point: I am part English/German and part Cherokee. The English part of my family came over on the ship after the Mayflower, called Fortune. Cherokee people have been here since the land bridge between Alaska and Russia. Neither time did any of my ancestors have to fill out paperwork or give the government (admitedly, nonexistant) a chunk of their money, or belongings. What is the big deal? These people were looking to improve their lives, as are many "aliens" today.

I can trace my ancestry back to about 1700 here in the states. I was told that our family came over on the Mayflower and that we are a decendant of Capt John Underhill. But have no link from 1700 connecting us to him? Also found family name in historical "the Doomsday Book", working for a King of England..last name 'Underhill". Thanks

I'm starting a small collection of books about American history?
for my personal library. Has anyone read anything interesting? I've bought 1776, the Mayflower, the complete writings of Andrew Jackson and Benjamin Franklin, and a Constitution for Dummies style book . . . Any suggestions would be appreciated. Easy to understand please. Ideally I'd like to have about twenty books which would accurately reflect American history between the mid 1600's to the mid 1800's.

Its been going on since the border was established between the U.S.A. and Mexico. Its been going on since the Mayflower. And nothing negative has happend. The U.S.A. is a mayor power made up by immigrants (legal and illegal). So do not be so narrow minded and think that all the evils in the U.S.A is due to illegal immigrants. Next time you see one (which for you would be anyone that looks hispanic) thank him for making this country strong.

There are people who are attempting to enter the U.S. from other countries abroad and are completing the necessary paperwork. However, these people are doing so fraudulently with documents that are entirely fake.
So please don't think that immigration is all about what is contained at the border. Check out the state department's web site and you will see plenty of cases that have been foiled for entry from many countries abroad.
You are right that there are many people who have migrated here so long ago - that's what makes this country so great - the big melting pot! The thing is, many countries have a "visiting/living" process and limit their entries as well. What I don't understand is why so many make a big deal about America asking for the proper paperwork for any individual entering its boundaries?
Reply:No thanks. I'd rather send them back and preserve our rights as citizens rather than be sponged off of by illegal non-tax paying squatters. They use our roads without paying taxes. They drive without licenses and insurance so that our legal citizens are left holding the bag because they are uninsured and illegal.
Just think, if you got those 15 or so million illegals to pay the same taxes I did last year (16,000) our government would have 240 trillion, yes trillion dollars to fund things like the roads, feeding the homeless, lowering our taxes, etc....

If you are an American with a 2nd DUI you spend 1-6 months in jail and are at the mercy of the state for 2 years while you jump through a million hoops.I think the Illegal should have to face the same penalties. After several DUI's Americans spend years in jail. Illegals don't pay their Hospital bills, they give false info and those of us who don't lie pay more to off set their nonpayment. Illegals are not supposed to get Fed funding but they get around that by using their American born children. Citing an Urban Institute study, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies Steven Camorata noted in 2004: "Roughly 17 percent of the prison population at the federal level are illegal aliens. That's a huge number since illegal aliens only account for about 3 percent of the total population."
1. Former California Gov. Pete Wilson places the percentage of illegal aliens in U.S. prisons even higher. In 2001, he told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly:
"We had problems related to the costs of educating children who were acknowledged to be in the country illegally, healthcare costs. One in five in our prison population were illegal immigrants who had been convicted of a felony after entering the country illegally."
The Federation for American Immigration Reform also turned to the Justice Department to get statistics on criminal aliens. They report:
"In March 2000, Congress made public Department of Justice statistics showing that, over the previous five years, the INS had released over 35,000 criminal aliens instead of deporting them. Over 11,000 of those released went on to commit serious crimes, over 1,800 of which were violent ones [including 98 homicides, 142 sexual assaults, and 44 kidnaping].
"In 2001, thanks to a decision by the Supreme Court, the INS was forced to release into our society over 3,000 criminal aliens [who collectively had been convicted of 125 homicides, 387 sex offenses, and 772 assault charges]."
1. Up to a third of the U.S. federal prison population is composed of non-citizens, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons statistics - but not all non-citizen prison inmates are illegal aliens.
As to the "hard-working" claim, CIS notes: "The proportion of immigrant-headed households using at least one major welfare program is 24.5 percent compared to 16.3 percent for native households."
Investor's Business Daily concurs: "Once [illegals] get here, they are 50 percent more likely to be on welfare than citizens."

I am angry that my ancestors came through Ellis Island and had to be checked out with a fine tooth comb to get in, worked their tails off and did not insist on having everyone else speak their language but rather learned English to communicate with other Americans. They did not wave flags of other countries and demand rights they were not entitled to! I say if you want to be an American....fine! Do it LEGALLY! Don't run over the border(there are more than Mexican people running over the borders illegally, like people from radical Muslim groups that we have to worry about) and ruin the dream for those who are trying to get here the right way. Illegals are a drain on our system because not all have good work ethics. Some depend on public charities, get an education paid for by the American taxpayer, collect food stamps and get housing while Americans cannot even get help sometimes. I don't think Mexico even tolerates American immigrants who are there legally so why should we tolerate lawbreakers?
Reply:I didn't realize what a problem illegal immigration was until I moved to a small town with a huge Illegal immigrant population.
The county I live in wants the illegals to stay for the farming, so illegal immigrants have more rights then American citizens. If you are an illegal immigrant and you have multiple DUI's without even having a license you spend six months in jail and are walking around free. If you are an American with a 2nd DUI you spend 1-6 months in jail and are at the mercy of the state for 2 years while you jump through a million hoops.I think the Illegal should have to face the same penalties. After several DUI's Americans spend years in jail. Illegals don't pay their Hospital bills, they give false info and those of us who don't lie pay more to off set their nonpayment. Illegals are not supposed to get Fed funding but they get around that by using their American born children. My family struggles and we watch illegals who are working under the table live wonderful lives. They go to their dances every week and have huge sweet 15 parties it's 15 for Mexicans not 16. And it is as costly as a very expensive wedding.

Reply:Yes, illegal immigration IS a real problem. It is a problem for children who do not have the attention that they deserve in American public schools, it is a problem for everyone who drives and has inflated insurance rates and it is a problem for Americans who otherwise would be working if not for a position filled by an illegal. just because you may not suffer from any of these things doesn't mean that it is not happening to other Americans. These other Americans are in need of support from their fellow citizens in speaking in a loud clear voice that we know that illegals have broken the law and should not benefit from their crimes.

This has been growing problem in recent decades.
Illegal immgration is a HUGE problem. Illegals bring disease (including incurable tuberculosis), crime (all kinds - but especially violent crime) and a unbearable drain on social welfare resources. For example, over 80 hospitals have had to close in California due to illegal aliens using the emergency room for routine care - then paying nothing for services.
Schools in border states are buried in illegals.
The cost to US taxpayers is about $50,000 per year, per illegal alien.
More than half of the prison population of California is made up of ILLEGALS.
We should position snipers on the border to shoot them as they come across. It's a damned invasion.
Reply:Yes, illegal immigration is a problem. They use the system and dont pay into it. Not all of the problems stem from illegals but they are a large factor. I will thank any legal immigrant or citizen for helping make this country strong, but not the illegals regardless of where they came from.

Here are five reasons why:
1. The most important principle of American Democracy is the rule of law. Since their presence alone constitutes a violation of the law, this reason alone constitutes sufficient reason to end illegal immigration.
2. Illegal immigrants don't pay income taxes. You must have a social security number to file an income tax return. Illegals don't have one, so they don't pay. Yes, they pay sales taxes in some states, but sales taxes don't fund schools and hospitals.
3. Illegals accept wages which are well below a "living wage". This depresses the wages for all workers and makes it more difficult for legal workers to find employment.
4. Mexico should be one of the wealthiest countries on the planet. Its people suffer though because it is unbelievably corrupt and its leaders are dishonest. Mexico has tremendous natural resources including oil; it has great tourist industries; it has great manufacturing potential. By leaving Mexico, instead of staying home and pushing for reform of their own systems, illegals are choosing short term economic gain and sacrificing the long term future of Mexico.
5. There is a legal way to enter the United States. If you truly wish to abandon your homeland and come here, fill out the paperwork, find a sponser, learn the rules and laws, and LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH! I firmly believe that if illegals spoke English clearly, Americans would be more willing to accept them. In fact, every American I knwo welcoms immigrants, so long as they go through the proper legal process.
Also, the suggestion that the first English colonists were somehow "illegal" is ridiculuous ad really doensn't warrant a reponse, but here's one anyway:
There was no unified political system in place to govern the whole of North America. The Native American alliances which did exist were more like loose trading partnerships, not an actual nation. Therefore, European nations including France, England, Spain, Russia, The Dutch, all claimed certain portions. Wars were fought and treaties agreed upon to delineate ownership. There was nothing illegal about it. Every national border on earth was at one time or another established by warfare. This is the norm; accept it.

2. Mexico is not a poor country, although it is corrupted, it is the 10th richest in the world.
