The Capital in Washington, D.C, has how many steps and what do they represent?
A) 365 steps, days of the year.
B) 13 steps, stripes on the American Flag.
C) 50 steps, USA states.
D) 100 steps, Pilgrims who came over on Mayflower
The Capital in Washington, D.C, has how many steps and what do they represent?
None of your answers is correct, if you asked the question exactly as it was written. I think this many not be the case.
The CapitOL building's step count is different from all the steps in the nation's capitAL, Washington DC.
The number of steps in the interior of the CapitOL building, from the basement to the top of the dome, is 365.

Saban vs. Goldfish?
Since Bear Bryant retired, Alabama has gone through seven coaches in 24 years. One never coached a game. Bill Curry was chased out of town after his third season, in which he went 10-2 and led the Tide to an SEC title. Only Gene Stallings lasted more than four years (7). However, this is better than Nick Saban, who has yet to remain anywhere beyond five years. The guy has Mayflower on his speed-dial and there are probably more Century 21 agents following him around town than Britney Spears has paparazzi. Yet Alabama, in its infinite wisdom, signed Saban to a 10-year contract.
I am considering buying a goldfish. Which do you think is more likely to still be around at the end of the 2016 season?
Saban vs. Goldfish?
When will you Dolphin fans grow up, move on, and quit whining about what a low-life Nick Saban is ? I didn't hear all
this crying when he went to Miami. I see it like this : He left Michigan State for a better job (LSU) in a better conference,
the SEC. He left LSU to try his hand at NFL football. Then he
realized college football was where he belonged, so he took
the offer Alabama made to him.
You Dolphin fans are just angry that a good football coach prefered to be somewhere other than Miami.

Reply:If he can't beat Auburn either, I'd definitely go with the goldfish, because Auburn vs. Alabama isn't your everyday rivalry . It's like a loser leaves town match for the coaches.
Reply:I would take a dead, bloated goldfish over an egotistical, lying, coward any day.
Reply:Well, obviously since a goldfish has no chance of still being here in 2016 the only possible answer here is Saban.
I think you might be surprised. Clearly Nick Saban didn't enjoy coaching in the NFL. He is more of a college coach control oriented guy. Since Bama has made him the highest paid college coach ever, I think he will stay there quite a while.
The question is can he get Bama's program back up to the level that its tradition deserves? You are no longer even near the top tier of the SEC anymore. With the recruiting classes of Tennessee, Florida, LSU and South Carolina, Bama won't be there anytime soon either!
Reply:Dude, definitely the goldfish. Saban has already managed to upset the local populus by blurting out semi offensive remarks. The only reason the school did not let him go then is because they would have embarassed themselves even further than what they already have. Alabama and Saban do have one thing in common though, disloyalty. Saban is a liar and Alabama is a CYA school that will never admit any wrongdoing in anything.

Weren't the Americans the first ILLEGAL Aliens?
The Mayflower Pilgrims and their Manifest Destiny took over the West moving the borders of Mexico just because they could. Whey then do they zero in on the Mexican border more than Canada? Canada is more likely to let the Ahmeds of the world in to do the Dirty Work of 9/11.
Weren't the Americans the first ILLEGAL Aliens?
No they werent the records indicate that people migrated since there were people. No country has an "indigenous" population, just earlier and later migrations. The trick is for the indigenous population to preserve itself from the migrants. The great wall of china is an example of this. The Huns %26amp; Rome etc.

If this is multiple chocie, then the answer would be D, if you are speaking of the United States.

Since the closure of Harbor Village, what is the best kept secret dim sum spot in San Francisco?
(I already know about Mayflower in the Richmond District, Fook Yuen in Millbrae, Yang Sing (SF), Tong Kiang (Richmond District). Any hidden gems out there?

I also like Canton on Folsom and Restaurant Peony on 9th in Oakland. Mayflower remains my all-time favoriet.

Do i prove my lineage through my paternal side?
I have traced my line back to the mayflower directly through my fathers line. The only thing is that, one of my gr. grandmothers maiden name cant be found. Can I still call that a complete line?
Thanks, Denicew
Do i prove my lineage through my paternal side?
Whether that will impede you or not depends on whether that woman is a direct ascendent between you and the person who was on the Mayflower. One of the things to realize, though, is that the Society of Mayflower Descendants has a very extensive database of proven lineages. They may have the information you need to complete the tree. There is someone in every state who is available to help you. I'd suggest you contact them and see if they can finish the puzzle for you.

Reply:If you mean is what you have good enough to get into the Mayflower Society, ask them.
If you mean "Have I finished?", most of us would say no; Genealogy is like a jigsaw puzzle in which every time you fit a piece into place, you get two more pieces.
Reply:If your paternal line is all you're interested in, then that is complete as far back as you've got it, but when it comes to genealogy nothing is ever complete.
There will always be a maiden name that's just out of reach or a new set of genealogical treasures round the corner.
That's the attraction of the hobby.
Thanks, Denicew

Why do you support illegal immigration?
I hear some people talk about how it's ok because that's how we got here on the Mayflower. Well that was before industrialization. There was not jobs to steal from Americans, there was no currency to send back to your native land, and crime was alot lower than it is today.
Why is it ok to let people sneak over our borders when in reality, they are lying to begin with, stealing our employment and our income, and committing crimes?
I just can't bring myself to understand this. Please explain to me your opinion on the matter so I can better understand it from all angles.
Thanks!

Why do you support illegal immigration?
Most illegals break at least three or more laws:
1. They come in illegally.
2. They often use fake I.D. Illegal.
3. They often use false S.S.N. illegal.
Then they kill over 5,000 people in the USA annually,
cost hundreds of millions in healthcare, and schooling.
What part of ILLEGAL are we having a problem with here?
Reply:I totally agree with you. I think that it is absurd that just a few months ago there were all these "immigrants rights" rallies, and all the illegals were saying that they were not criminals...
But if they did not cross the border LEGALLY, doesn't that make them criminals? Yes, I think that it does! Not to mention that the ready availability of cheap labor drives down the wages of REAL Americans.
Reply:I don't think it's okay at all! No Way! I think if a person wants to come here and escape a cruel country and/or government, just as our ancestors had to, they should go through the legal process, learn the language(after all they wantes to be Americans, they should have to talk like one) and its history in order to be an American. Then they will have earned the American title and the right to work and earn in America as we do. They should not get aid in any way, shape or form unless they go through the process too. We work too hard for our educations and levels in our jobs to get the status we are at and to gain respect and I believe they should work hard in schooling and their jobs also. We all should be treated equal no matter where we are or where we are from. I would expect the same if I wanted to go elsewhere, ya know? I don't believe that they should get paid by the government for living here and for education or for new cars every year like some nationalities just because they escaped either. That's too much if you ask me. Why don't we get those perks, say because my family escaped Sicily 1 and a half generations ago to get away from the bullshit in Europe period, let alone its dictator. Where's my lump check monthly, new car every year of my choice(no matter if there's a monetary limit or not) and spectacularly expensive education for a level of degree for the unlimited level of career status for me for free? That would be awesome and I wouldn't have to scrimp and save all of the time.

Reply:People who justify the illegal criminals in this country by reffering to the Pilgrims as illegals are not only STUPID, they are WRONG.
The US was settled by Europeans in a time when there were no comprehensive maps of the world. Hell, Columbus thought he was in the Indies. HYPOTHETICALLY, if Adam %26amp; Eve were from the Garden of Eden in say,Mesopotamia, then they travelled to Greece when God basnished them from the Garden, were they illegal immigrants in Greece? NO, Greece was not a country then. There were no "laws" so nothing was "illegal". When the Pilgrims came to North America, there were human inhabitants. Those humans either lost the effort to prevent Europeans from colonizing this land or they simply allowed it by doing nothing to stop it.
Reply:There's no such thing as illegal immigration so how can one support it or not. The immigration issue is a dodge to keep really ignorant Americans from thinking about the "war" we've lost so badly! Oh, and if an "alien" could take your job, it's not because he'd do it cheaper; it's because you were a goof-off. Sorry if you are un- or minimally-employed, but it's not immigrants' fault.
Reply:I don't think that you will find one person that says that they condone illegal immigration, it is unnerving to know that people are not checked before they come into our country, they could be violent criminals, terrorists, or have communicable diseases.
I think that you may find answers like mine, who are looking for a comprehensive immigration reform. As it stands now our south American neighbours only chance of immigration are family based claims, those that have no family that are legally here are out of luck. There should be a way for the average man to legally come into the united states to live. I am not saying that everyone should come in, but everyone should feel like they have a chance to come in.
Those that are already here need to be checked, by looking at medical history and criminal activity, which of course would be something they pay for, not the government. We start weeding out the unwanted and start paving a path to citizenship for the desirable. We charge fines for illegal entry (how's that for an economy boost)
What I want is for this country to be safe and fair and free of the hostility that we are feeling. Let's make some immigration changes because obviously with the amount of illegal immigrants in the US, you can tell that our current laws and policies are just not working.
Hope I helped.

Martin family history...can anyone help?
I'm trying to research if i'm related to the Sussana (North) Martin that was involved with the Salem Witch Trials. Interesting stuff...She was married to George, son of Christopher Martin and Marie Prower. Needing help finding out who's Christophers Father. I can find out that Christopher wasn't a very nice man, and that he was in charge of getting supplies for a trip on the Mayflower. My paternal line is Dean - Frank - Charles - Asa - Sylvester - Seth - Seth - Ephriam. Also could use help finding more on that line too. Most of my family was from Grafton, NH and Rehopboth/Swansea Mass.
Martin family history...can anyone help?
I suggest Ancestry.com or Geneology.com
But you might also be able to find records from that period in the city/town archives.

How much should we expect to pay movers from a 2BR in Manhattan to Charlotte?
We would have the movers pack and unpack and our apt does not have much stuff in it now. A few big items like the bed and a couple of entertainment centers, but everything else is reasonable sixe (we are gettign rid of the couch).
Looking for a general sense of what a reputable mover (Mayflower? Allied?) would charge for this type of move.
How much should we expect to pay movers from a 2BR in Manhattan to Charlotte?
OK I work as a contracting agent for the gov arranging to move house hold goods for military members, so i know a good bit.
you are looking at about $2000-2500 for the move. they are going to charge you for every box and roll of tape that they use.
TAKE PICTURES !!!!!!TAKE Pictures !!!!!!!TAKE PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!
It will make your claim iron tight when they "lose" your TV or poke a hole in your couch.
TAKE Irreplaceable / small high value items in the car with you (pictures, JEWELRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, laptops etc.)
When they are filling out the inventory for the condition of your items make sure you agree with the description. They one tried to describe my 1 week old couch as soiled and faded.
Beware of the packers, I'm sorry to say but most are not the most trust worthy, but on the same note. Don't be an asshole to them either. its amazing how far providing snacks and drinks go.
All the companies you mentioned are not who will be moving you, there are local agents (kinda like franchises) that are the real owners, they just use the name.
Reply:Way too much, I would say. When its just a few large items, its cheaper and easier and safer to do it yourself. If you're worried about lifting the heavy items, hire some local people, preferably ones you know. If not there are companies that will come help you with loading at your old place or unloading at your new place. You don't have to worry about them riffling through your stuff cuz you'll have packed yourself. You won't hurt yourself loading cuz they'll do that. You will save money cuz it's WAY cheaper for a Uhaul than Bekins, and its easier cuz you really don't have all that much stuff.
We're doing a similar move next month, and I've done a lot of pricing research. We are moving 4 peoples stuff out of a 2 bedroom apartment to a 5 bedroom house... From New Mexico to Indiana of all places! So I know what you're looking forward to. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Ill choose a best answer?
how did the mayflower compact and the fundamental order of conncticut build the framework for the american republic?
Ill choose a best answer?
It formed the basis for self governance that eventually we as the americans used as a frame work to build our government.Ex: having a judiciary to be able to carry out and enforce written law. Having lawful assemblies to determine courses of action with in the community. These and many other things formed the basis of our american government/republic.
Reply:it have influenced your constitution.
Reply:The Mayflower compact was very similar to the Constitution. It outlined the basic forms of a Representative government in which beliefs were shared.
Basically, people needed to follow it, it was their essence of survival in a way.
Reply:seriously?! you?! normally I choose best answers for other peoples questions..... darn it.

Lincolnshire?
Lincolnshire has played a great part in the early discovery and exploration of America. Some of it's achievements have even been credited to others. It's influence on America continued even into the twentieth century. Here we'll test your knowledge of these connections.
Around 80% of the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed on the Mayflower were Lincolnshire Puritans. Contrary to popular belief,Their journey began from a small Lincolnshire port before the STOPPED IN AT PLYMOUTH on the way to America to take on supplies. Their original port of departure was:
options
South Killingholme
South Ferriby
Marshchapel
Ingoldmells
Lincolnshire?
Hi Jay,
As far as I was aware the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from the banks of the Humber River at a place called Immingham Creek. There is a plaque in Immingham today that commerorates this.
Of the places you list : Marshchapel is inland and Ingoldmells is too far down the coast towards Skeggy. The closest of the other two to Immingham is South Killingholme, although this isn't on the coast either, but South Ferriby is.
Reply:south ferriby, from someone who lives in lincolnshire, its the only place near a river which is in lincolnshire...
Reply:Many of the Pilgrim leaders were from Lincolnshire but had left the county years before, having relocated to Holland. When the Pilgrims left for North America, they sailed on the Mayflower from London, the ship having arrived in London two weeks before from La Rochelle, France.

Reply:Many of the Pilgrim leaders were from Lincolnshire but had left the county years before, having relocated to Holland. When the Pilgrims left for North America, they sailed on the Mayflower from London, the ship having arrived in London two weeks before from La Rochelle, France.
Has anyone moved with Bekins?
I've done some research online, and it seems that Bekin provides good moving services. I got an estimate from them and have set a move date, but for whatever reason, the rep I'm dealing with says that there is no written contract until the day of the move. They aren't asking for any deposit from me either. The whole thing just makes me nervous that neither side has anything in writing confirming the day they're supposed to come pick up my stuff and the services they'll provide. The last time I moved, I used Mayflower and had a horrible experience, but looking through my paperwork, I found that I had a signed contract stating when they were supposed to come and I gave them a deposit.
Has anyone moved with Bekins who did not have a contract in place before the move? It just seems so suspect.

we've utilized both and others. All were great. All documents were formalized upon arrival and loading and before sealing the van. All were prompt to begin and on time to unload. I don't think anything is out of place with your mover and plans.
I suggest that you DO check on the operator or the one doing the Bekins franchise that you will be using. Call and/or look up at Better Business Bureau. Are they a member? If so, what is their record? A peace of mind thing.

Compare and contrast?
Can someone PLEASE help me compare and contrast the magna carta and the mayflower compact? For some reason im finding it very difficult.
Compare and contrast?
Magna Carta
1. Dictated to a Tyrant by Aristocrats
2. Designed to protect people from an irresponsible King
3. Described as the basis for Common Law in England
4. The first written "constitution" to which a monarchy agreed
Mayflower Compact
1. Agreement by people to govern themselves
2. Aimed to prove the people were responsible for themselves
3. Associated with the beginning of Independent Government in America
4. The first written laws put in place by the consent of those who were to be governed
Reply:I don't even know what that is but I know you are to find things alike and find things that are not alike.
Reply:Well I know that the purpose of the magna Carta was to limit the kings powers.
idk if that helps though

What does the Supreme Court think about whether or not we are a Christian nation?
In Zorach v. Clauson, 343 U.S. 306, 313, 72 S.Ct. 679, 684, 96 L.Ed. 954 (1952), we gave specific recognition to the proposition that "[w]e are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being." The fact that the Founding Fathers believed devotedly that there was a God and that the unalienable rights of man were rooted in Him is clearly evidenced in their writings, from the Mayflower Compact to the Constitution itself. This background is evidenced today in our public life through the continuance in our oaths of office from the Presidency to the Alderman of the final supplication, "So help me God." Likewise each House of the Congress provides through its Chaplain an opening prayer, and the sessions of this Court are declared open by the crier in a short ceremony, the final phrase of which invokes the grace of God. Again, there are such manifestations in our military forces, where those of our citizens who are under the restrictions of military service wish to engage in voluntary worship. Indeed, only last year an official survey of the country indicated that 64% of our people have church membership, Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce, Statistical Abstract of the United States (83d ed. 1962), 48, while less than 3% profess no religion whatever. Id., at p. 46. It can be truly said, therefore, that today, as in the beginning, our national life reflects a religious people who, in the words of Madison, are "earnestly praying, as . . . in duty bound, that the Supreme Lawgiver of the Universe . . . guide them into every measure which may be worthy of his [blessing . . .]" Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments, quoted in Everson v. Board of Education, 330 U.S. 1, 71-72, 67 S.Ct. 504, 538-539, 91 L.Ed. 711 (1947) (Appendix to dissenting opinion of Rutledge, J.)
What does the Supreme Court think about whether or not we are a Christian nation?
Intriguing. They say we're not a Christian nation, but instead recognize the USA's Deistic origins.
Very interesting.
Reply:The Deist concept of deity is that the deity started the universe and then walked away. Deists hold no holy book, no messiah, no savior. The idea is that deity never showed itself to the universe and does not provide an afterlife. Report It
Reply:I think that as the culture changes, so will the law. There are significantly more people claimint no religion in 2007 as opposed to 1947, when this opinion was given. As the nation grows, so will its religious views.
Or are non-christians not welcome anymore? Must one profess a love of Christ in order to be American? Is it love it or leave it?
I think that applying past morality to today is only a method of holding on, tooth and claw, to an anachronism.
Reply:Belief in God does not equate belief in Christianity. Many of the Founding Fathers were Deists. They believed in God, but, as Benjamin Franklin put it, "about his Divinity, I have my doubts."

Around, what? 75%? Ok, around 75% of the Americans is Christian. So, the USA is a Christian nation.
I'm Dutch, according to the latest research 7% of the Dutch people regularly visit a church, and 43% says to believe in some form of God. They can be catholics, protestants, muslims or whatever. So, Holland is an atheistic country.
That doesn't take away the fact that both countries have freedom of religion. Freedom of religion automatically means that one god can't be made more important in any law than other gods. It also means that every religion (or lack thereof)has equal rights.

When will there be another christian war in America?
Maybe the mormons will get PO'ed for getting dumped on all the time, or maybe evangelicals will try and dispose of all the "heathens" not interpreting the bible strictly enough. The guns are all here, something has got to give. If the arctic melts more, the new Mayflower can sail the "persecuted" christians north. History does repeat itself you know. Is it wrong to re-write history?
The original Mayflower Compact read as follows
In ye name of God, Amen. We whose names are underwriten, ye loyall subjects of our dread soveraigne Lord King James by ye grace of God, of Great Britaine, Franc, %26amp; Ireland king, defender of ye faith, e%26amp; Haveing undertaken, for ye glorie of god, and advancemente of ye Christian faith and honour of our king %26amp; countrie, a voyage to plant ye first colonie in ye Northerne parts of Virginia, doe by these presents solemnly %26amp; mutualy in ye presence of God, and one of another, covenant %26amp; combine our selves togeather

I've never seen that in a history book.
Maybe you just live in an area where they choose really bad books for your kids.
Reply:That's not re-writing it. That's just selectively quoting....and depending upon the purpose of the lesson using it, may be perfectly appropriate. Context, context, context.
BTW, what the heck do you mean by "This is what we see in the history books our children read"? Are you really suggesting that every child in America (I'm presuming you're American) learns from the same book????? Or are you just being deliberately inflamatory with gross generalizations?
Reply:Well, history is all relative. Sometimes it's rewritten to change the context and to mislead. But, every now and again, words can be re-arranged for clarification.
This passage, the first version, is very hard to read, so it's possible that the textbook publisher made an editorial decision to simplify the language.
Reply:Yes, it is wrong to omit such important content.
That's just one reason why I send my kid to a private Christian school.
Reply:Yes
Reply:fundies did that already for their own convenience. they have their own version of history as well as the Bible.
Reply:And your point is what?
To start with, rewriting history would be a lie. OTOH, it isn't wrong to tell history from different viewpoints.
For example, to say that all native Americans willingly gave up their land to settlers would be a lie. But to tell history from the viewpoint of both settlers and Indians would be more accurate than just telling it from one side.
What I think you are trying to get at is that you think this country was founded on Puritanic principles and that the Constitution's prohibition against a state promoted religion is wrong. The Mayflower Compact was written for Puritans - not Americans.
Reply:That is so wrong!

What I wonder is, why no high school history class will go into detail on Article 11 of the Treaty with Tripoli.
I also don't see the necessity in re-writing our Pledge of Allegiance....nor the necessity to include religious phrases on our currency.

Can you interpret or put this question into simpler words? "Give three examples that illustrate...?"
"Give three examples that illustrate democratic principles established by governments."
It's a DBQ so there's a chart that shows "Insitution/Year" and in the other column "significance"
Some examples of things shown in "Insitution/Year" are: virginia House of Burgesses, New England Town Meetings, and Mayflower Compact.
I don't get the question at all. Can you just translate the queestion into simpler terms? I don't want the answer though.
Thanks.

Are you filling in the table, then? If so, you would enter the important "first" that each of these represents for American democracy.
If those are merely samples, then you'll have to come up with examples of "firsts" -- what are the big ideas of democracy and where were they first demonstrated? (in America?)
If it's not due tomorrow, ask your teacher for clarification.

Do you know that the Pilgrims and the Puritans wanted to make the USA a Christian Nation?
Pilgrims and Puritans had similar dreams. Both wanted to see their country blessed. But each had different views of how to go about it. In serving their God they had a different set of priorities. Fortunately the New World was a big land. And America provided a lot of elbow room for people of different persuasions to go about their business. It also offered many new opportunities. And so when they came to America the Pilgrims and Puritans began to flow together and complement one another.
FOREFATHERS" SIGNED A DOCUMENT. THIS WAS THE COVENANT KNOWN
AS THE 'MAYFLOWER COMPACT'. THEY WERE BINDING THEMSELVES
TOGETHER AND BEFORE GOD AS 'ONE BODY POLITICK'. THIS BECAME
A FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLE FOR ESTABLISHING THE AMERICAN NATION. -http://endtimepilgrim.org/puritans11.htm
Happy Thanksgiving!
Do you know that the Pilgrims and the Puritans wanted to make the USA a Christian Nation?
nice rant, but you never see the united states government accepting anything in the "mayflower compact"
only the constitution, which deliberately severes the ties between religion and state affairs....
nice try though
have a great thanksgiving weekend...
Reply:What is the normal age of a pilgrim???
Answer:- Pilgrimage.
Thanks for the site. Happy Thanksgiving.
Reply:Yeah, and did you know they did not want to form the USA. The USA was formed a long time after the Pilgrims came over. Lots of different thinking was happening when the United States were formed. The people forming it felt that the government should be there to serve the people and that all people have rights. One of those rights is freedom of religion. A government that is based on religion cannot properly serve the people. A religious neutral government will serve the people much better than one that is promoting a religion.
The Bill of Rights overrides any document that the pilgrims came up with when they landed.
Reply:"And America provided a lot of elbow room for people of different persuasions to go about their business"
Do you have ANY idea how f'ing ironic it is, that of ALL people.....YOU post something that contains this phrase??????
The rest of you desert worshipping thumpers take note.
Reply:Yes, and the first felons ever to be put to death in this Nation under God were a whole bunch of witches an warlocks!
Reply:They didn't. They had ideals for their own societies, but the idea of a "United States", of any sort of religious practice, was a hundred years in the future.
Reply:Yes , I did . So what ?
Reply:Not all pilgrims were puritans.. only about half were puritans the other half - like John Alden and Miles Standish - were Anglicans.
If they had truly wanted a christian nation, they would not have enacted laws against the Roman Catholics and the Quakers all of whom believed in the same deity as they did. The puritans were only interested in their own brand of intolerance.
And if they were such charitable christians, they wouldn't have stabbed the Native Americans in the back.. the same ones who helped them survive that first hard winter. If it hadn't been for the charity of the Native Americans none of the pilgrims would have made it and they obviously weren't thankful for that...
Reply:The USA didn't exist yet when the pilgrims arrived. If it had, they never would have received green cards.
Reply:There were later efforts to declare the U.S. "A Christian Nation."
In 1863, thinking that the Civil War was God's punishment for not including him explicitly by name in the Constitution, a coalition of 11 Protestant denominations worked to amend the Constitution in order to rectify that. The next year, there was another attempt, this time by the National Reform Association. It also failed, but one member of that association was John Pollack, who played a key role in getting "In God We Trust put on the 2-cent coin in 1864.
There were further attempts in Congress in 1874, 1896, and 1910, but thank the Gods, none of them passed. There have been more attempts in the 1940s, the 1950s, 1962, and 1998, but none of those have made it to a congressional vote.
Reply:But lets not forget about all the Native American people that these good 'ol God fearing Christians killed. But hey, as long as the Pilgrams %26amp; Puritans could worship freely, that's all that mattered Huh?
Reply:Yes that's true Crimmson the American Constitution was founded on the basic principles of the Bible.
Reply:Yes I knew that and that's why most of our laws are based on the ten commandments.
Allot of what we have in America is based on the Torah and the Holy Bible that's why we're so blessed.
Think about it compared to so called 3rd world Countries which have been around for thousands of years America is only a few hundred years old and we are much more civilized and organized than they are and why do you think that is?
It's because we are blessed by God who loves us and takes really good care of us because we honor and worship Him.
Reply:And yet OUR forefathers refer to neither a set religion or specific god, but rather to a "god of nature."
Reply:Pilgrims and Puritans are the same people. BTW, you were supposed to ask a real question
not a question which you answer for yourself for everyone to see
Reply:Ok then explain to me the Treaty of Tripoli and why the word "god" isn't mentioned ONCE in the Constitution OR the Bill of Rights. Why do you people have selective intelligence?
Reply:Yes, I do know that. When people talk about separation of church and state, the original intent was not to have a religious system rule over them as the Pope and Catholicism did, and later, the Church of England or Anglican church. They certainly didn't want religion totally removed from society as some people think today!
Reply:Actually, even as recently as 1776, there were those who wanted to found a Theocracy in America rather than a Democratic-Republic. (Because Democracy and Republic were created by Pagan people)

The Puritans and Separatists did not go over to the New World for the religious freedom for all ,one of the principles the US Constitution came to stand for.;
they wanted "a City on A Hill" where the ideals of Calvinism would be mandated as law for all. Dissenters, even Calvinist ones, were sent quickly out of Massachusetts, if they were lucky ,and if they were "returned ' or missionary Quakers they, like Mary Dyer and others, would be executed. The Catholic Mass was forbidden under penalty of death.
The Spanish Inquisition was not the only one or always the worst to deal with. since Protestants had plenty of their own.
Catholic-founded Maryland was established with tolerance for all Christians and later Rhode Island ( started by a Calvinist refugee from Puritan MA) and Penn went furtherin religious freedom . The Catholics lost their freedom to practice in Maryland by the time of the English Civil War.
IMHPO ,I would prefer to be accused of witchcraft before the Spanish or Papal Inquisitions(which were different for the Pope had little say over the Spanish one) than before any court in Protestant Puritan Massachusetts.
I am sure that the Native American Indians of New England ,including the "Praying Indian" Christians, did not see the Puritan Commenwealth among them as an unmixed blessing by the end of King Phillip's War.
May we all learn the lesson of gratitude to God and to and for all the people(including those who differ from us) around us who share this earth.
Reply:So the slaughtering of natives for their god is justifiable? They really couldn't let them be on their land they had to take it by force, enslave them, pillage their villages, and take their natural resources. Nice, really nice.

Submitted to the Senate May 29, 1797. (Message of May 26, 1797.) Resolution of advice and consent June 7, 1797. Ratified by the United States June 10, 1797.
What was the written plan for a government drawn up by the plymouth colonists?
Plymouth Colony did not have a royal charter authorizing it to form a government. Still, some means of governance was needed; the Mayflower Compact, signed by the 41 able-bodied men aboard the Mayflower upon their arrival in Provincetown Harbor on November 21, 1620, was the colony's first governing document. Formal laws were not codified until 1636. The colony's laws were based on a hybrid of English common law and religious law as laid out in the Bible.
The colony offered nearly all adult males potential citizenship in the colony. Full citizens, or "freemen," were accorded full rights and privileges in areas such as voting and holding office. To be considered a freeman, adult males had to be sponsored by an existing freeman and accepted by the General Court. Later restrictions established a one-year waiting period between nominating and granting of freeman status and also placed religious restrictions on the colony's citizens, specifically preventing Quakers from becoming freemen. Freeman status was also restricted by age; while the official minimum age was 21, in practice most men were elevated to freeman status between the ages of 25 and 40, averaging somewhere in their early thirties.

The colony's most powerful executive was its Governor, who was originally elected by the freemen, but was later appointed by the General Court in an annual election. The General Court also elected seven "Assistants" to form a cabinet to assist the governor. The Governor and Assistants then appointed "Constables" who served as the chief administrators for the towns and "Messengers" who were the main civil servants of the colony. They were responsible for publishing announcements, performing land surveys, carrying out executions, and a host of other duties.
The General Court was both the chief legislative and judicial body of the colony. It was elected by the freemen from among their own number and met regularly in Plymouth, the capital town of the colony. As part of its judicial duties, it would periodically call a "Grand Enquest", which was a grand jury of sorts, elected from the freemen, who would hear complaints and swear out indictments for credible accusations. The General Court, and later lesser town and county courts, would preside over trials of accused criminals and over civil matters, but the ultimate decisions were made by a jury of freemen.
As a legislative body, the General Court could make proclamations of law as needed. In the early years of the colony, these laws were not formally compiled anywhere. In 1636 these laws were first organized and published in the 1636 Book of Laws. The book was reissued in 1658, 1672, and 1685. Among these laws included the levying of "rates", or taxes, and the distribution of colony lands. The General Court established townships as a means of providing local government over settlements, but reserved for itself the right to control specific distribution of land to individuals within those towns. When new land was granted to a freeman, it was directed that only the person to whom the land was granted was allowed to settle it. It was forbidden for individual settlers to purchase land from Native Americans without formal permission from the General Court. The government recognized the precarious peace that existed with the Wampanoag, and wished to avoid antagonizing them by buying up all of their land.
The laws also set out crimes and their associated punishments. There were several crimes that mandated the death penalty: treason, murder, witchcraft, arson, sodomy, rape, bestiality, adultery, and cursing or smiting one's parents.[98] The actual exercise of the death penalty was fairly rare; only one sex-related crime, a 1642 incidence of bestiality by Thomas Granger, resulted in execution. One person, Edward Bumpus, was sentenced to death for "striking and abusing his parents" in 1679, but his sentence was commuted to a severe whipping by reason of insanity. Perhaps the most notable use of the death penalty was in the execution of the Native Americans convicted of the murder of John Sassamon; this helped lead to King Philip's War.Though nominally a capital crime, adultery was usually dealt with by public humiliation. Convicted adulterers were often forced to wear the letters "A.D." sewn into their garments, much in the manner of Hester Prynne in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter.
Several laws dealt with indentured servitude, a legal status whereby a person would work off debts or be given training in exchange for a period of unrecompensed service. The law required that all indentured servants had to be registered by the Governor or one of the Assistants, and that no period of indenture could be less than six months. Further laws forbade a master from shortening the length of time of service required for his servant, and also confirmed that any indentured servants whose period of service began in England would still be required to complete their service while in Plymouth.

If you have asked this question exactly as it was listed, none of the answers is correct.
There is a difference between the CapitOL building in Washington, DC, and the entire city, which is the nation's capitAL. So "the capital" contains all the steps in Washington DC, which is much more than all of these answers.
There are 365 steps in the interior of the CapitOL building in Washington, DC, from the basement to the top of the dome.

What do you think of the education /knowledge Americans have concearning the rest of the world ?
On yahoo answers I have seen Canada rebuked for celebratting Thanksgiving on a different day then the States. They believe it is to celebrate thier history and the Mayflower. While infact Canadians -Americans did not invent Thanksgiving. It began in Canada. Frobisher's celebration in 1578 was 43 years before the pilgrims gave thanks in 1621 for the bounty that ended a year of hardships and death. Abraham Lincoln established the date for the US as the last Thursday in November. In 1941, US Congress set the National Holiday as the fourth Thursday in November.
I've also seen on yahoo answers them ridiculing Boxing day as something Canadians started instead of it being from Britain .
Most have no clue that Canada in an independant country in the common wealth or that Britain plays a big part in our history.
I also read a yahoo answer just recently that stated Britain and the united stated has similiar history in black slavery .Not sure what they were refering to. Just used for examples
What do you think of the education /knowledge Americans have concearning the rest of the world ?
It appears that in the USA people can go though school, including trade training and know next to nothing about the wide world.
Prolly only the ones who have a good knowledge are those who have gotten through uni.

Reply:Get over it, really. Most Americans don't give a damn about Canada or the rest of the world.
Reply:We can all benefit from more education - and don't we just love the internet for giving us access to all of these different views and sources of knowledge!
I guess each generation has the opportunity to improve - we soak everything up as kids (important to our survival) and then shake some of it off as we grow and educate ourselves (important for growth). When education is used to control (such as the dominance of Creationism in very religious US states), you'll eventually get people with a lot more growing to do before they actually have independent knowledge. Then think about all of the distractions from learning - drink and playstations come to mind (mmm, I fancy a beer).
Is it any wonder that so many people are misinformed about the simplest things? I don't think it's unique to the US, but I think the US is a standard bearer for the rest of the world and therefore suffers more when it's citizens are shown as ignorant or arrogant.

Reply:With regards to black slavery, USA and England do have similar history. We, as Britons, traded in slaves until William Wilberforce, from my home city, called for abolition. Obviously, during this period, Canada was completely neutral and classed as a free state.
With regards to Americans education. They are brought up and trained to believe that they are the best country in the world and that they are better than everyone else.
Only thing is, no one dare tell them they're not!!!!!
I didn't even realise thanksgiving was started by the Canadians. I thought it was the pilgrims thanking God for their first harvest in a new land. The Indians helped than plant crops etc.
Reply:This type of question seems to elicit knee jerk reactions from people. Phrasing the question in the way you have seems to be generalized to the point that it is meaningless. It almost seems to be a reverse nationalism in response to americans' perceived indifference to the rest of the world. There are Americans who are more informed and those who are less informed.
Reply:I used to sell cruises on a cruise ship out of Texas, a lot of people didn't know where Alaska was, or Florida. Most didn't know approximately how far Europe was. Some even thought that England was a make believe place. Americans need to travel, the only reasonable/geographically aware ones I've met have been to other places, and not just on stupid cruise ships
Reply:america is a dictatorial democracy. citizens are taught to think in the spirit of "we're the best, f**k the rest". Anyway... the EU is gonna kick as* in the future. I can't wait for america to get a slap in the face. a wake-up slap.
Reply:I think SOME of the americans on here think because you are close geographically you must be close in every other way.
just don't mention that their nation was just a con by the French landowners, that pisses them off.
SOME Americans don't seem to be taught much history at school
SOME british are rather ignorant too
As argument must suppose SOME Canadians are too
Reply:I don't think it's as much a consideration of education or knowledge as it is a lack of respect for foreign cultures, which is not at all exclusive to America or Americans. I've seen equal slandering of the United States and it's citizens from other nations, and I've also seen some very specific attacks upon America, it's cultures, and it's people by Canadians. I still don't see that as a reason to assume that Canadians or anyone else is uneducated or lacking in knowledge, but simply lacking in respect.
It goes both ways.
Reply:I think of myself as well educated and well read, but I learned something from your "question". Thanks for teaching me that Canada's Thanksgiving came before the first one in the US.

One the other hand, I still don't know what Boxing Day is. I've asked many Brits, and I get many answers.
Reply:I agree with a lot you stated there.
The reason for it? I have no idea..
Have you ever seen the Rick Merer Show? He is a Canadian Comedian that showed the ignorance a lot of Americans had about Canada.
Examples.....
Canada has a 25 hour clock
We just got newspapers
Canada is just north of South America.
The list goes on.
Maybe they just do not want to know.

Why do most whites complain about black history?
Hispanic history is in Sept 15.
Black history is Feburary
Asian history is in May
Women's history is in March
Native American history is in November
Gay history is in Feburary in the UK.
I learn white history 11 months.
I'm really tiring of hearing about Pilgrims, the mayflower, and Salem Witch Trials
I don't think this is racist seeing how ALL minorities have history months and they are not DENOUNCING whites at all.
It's only racism when you say you're superior or hate another race. None of those months are doing that!
Why do most whites complain about black history?
i am a average white male. i have a white girlfriend. but just because i am white and have a white girlfriend doesn't mean I'm racist. what i think is racist is the fact for so many years white people were superior over any other race. now that has change and no one should think that there better than someone else because of there skin color. another thing i don't understand is when it come to a job. if one black male is just as qualified as a white male. they will pick the black male just because hes black. i think thats racist. i think in the University Of Wisconsin. to be accepted into the school i must at least have a 4.0 and that wont even cut it. but if your a minority they will let you in with a 3.2 if everyone is talking about equal right it should be equal for everyone. and in the school I'm in we have a choice in what we learn. we can learn about European history, African history, Asian history of south American history. i think it would be wrong to only learn about European history because im in the Africa classes and it is one of my favorite classes because i learn about how unique people are and how different their customs are. but i think everything in this world should be 100% equal. what happened in the past was so wrong and i am ashamed to be white because of that but i know i would not have ever treated anyone different in those days just like i still don't today.
Reply:Hmmm I dont personally think that many "whites" have an issue with Black History Mo. . Many great people have contributed to how this country was formed, regardless of their race, they should be celebrated.

Here's the thing...most Americans don't really care. And so an incendiary racists can bring the issue up again, a high-ranking member of the minority group brings it to the attention of the media, and then the majority of Americans who don't really care say, "What on Earth is he/she talking about?"
Most people just want to go to work to talk about television and sex, or sports and drinking, or cars and girls or guys.
And also: Most of these privileges that whites get are so unknown even to them because they don't even realize it. They are not single-handedly saying, "Okay, he's black, he's white, so I'm going to pick the white guy."
They just grab the guy the always hang out with.
Believe it or not, merit is good. But kissing butt is even better. And sadly, it works.
My advice: get to a comfortable level in which you have some say, then try to slowly turn the tables...but read again: SLOWLY.
People don't like change. But if it goes slowly, they are more accepting.
This is why gay marriage will eventually happen. Eventually. You have to remember that ALL society has to slowly assimilate it.
So will legal drugs and such "taboo" topics.
Hey, tattoos were out once, right? Now they're totally in. And that didn't happen overnight.

I think as white people (a lumped category in itself to include every european anyone!) it is important to learn about other cultures. BUT, people are people and if they do something brave or good or world-moving then they should be recognized regardless of what race they are. I don't think there should be ______ history months at all!
And you are learning american history... not white history. It just so happens the founders of our present day america were white. From England.

i personally couldnt care less if there isn't a white history month. i actually like learning about the history makers, whichever group they tend to belong to.
but its the same concept as say, scholarships that have stipulations including race. for example, some scholarships require that the recepiant be black. whereas a famous figure in history, i believe it was jefferson, tried to have a scholarship set up specfically for white kids. it was refused. i personally think its not fair that blacks can have rights that i can't. the requirement that the recipient be black means that there is a smaller pool to choose from, increasing a persons chance of getting that scholarship. whereas any scholarship i might apply for is the same scholarship that every ethnicitiy will apply for. that isn't fair because instead of a pool of say, ten people, i have a pool of a hundred people.
I think everyone should be equal. there shouldn't be any stipulations based on race. that makes it fair.
i feel that raising certian people up makes it unfair. like with hurricane katrina. some famous black man (i dont remember who) declared that the red cross was only helping white people. guess what, they can't do that. its a lawsuit waiting to happen, and no human in their right mind would be willing to help one person, and not another. if your heart wants to help, it will help all. i know racist people in the south, paramedics. they hate blacks and asians, and yet, when a black or an asian is in need, they help them all the same. it hurt to see that there was a special fund set up for blacks. what about white people? could someone honestly be so hateful that, upon seeing someone that was white approach them and want the same bowl of soup they're giving everyone else, turn that person away because they're white?
i wish everything was equal. that would be nice.
Reply:As far as I know not all whites have a problem with Black History. The one's that do are ignorant and bigoted, but that could come from any race, not just caucasions.
Reply:First of all we don't "get" (as one of your answerers stated) 7 month's of "white" history. The historical facts are that white people came here and claimed this country. The first half of America's history is an accounting of all the things that happened as the country grew. Then you have the civil war. At this time the black slaves were free and then the black Americans who contributed to this country began to show up in the history books.
Whites did buy black s as slaves from the northerners who bought them from Africans(black men). The problem with a "history" month is that as is human nature we focus on only the great things that people of that race did. When you are learning about black history during black history month do they leave out the African's who sold your ancestors in the first place? Let me answer that yes they do. That is never discussed. White folks didn't run over to Africa and chase down black folks and capture them and then bring them to America to sell. Your own people sold thier people to the slave traders.
In history we learn about the whites good and bad. We learn that we in fact conquered the Indidans and yes unfairly took their land. Historically that's how land has been acquired people fight and the winner takes the prize. It was unfair in that they had bows, arrows, and spears and we had guns. History teaches about Benedict Arnold and his treachery, it teaches about outlaws like Jessie James. We don't just focus on the good things that white Americans have done. So, yes it is a double standard. I will not go into all the things that we can't do or have because of the outcry of racism that would accompany that. All I am saying is before you complain wake up and check out everything and include the good and the bad because that's what history truly is. A factual accounting of the events that formed a country.

The Pilgrims sailed to America only for religious freedom...is it true?
...That idea is not altogether accurate, especially when one reads the first few lines of the Mayflower Compact, which says:
..."In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e%26amp;. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia...... "
...Not politically correct I know, but this is history.
...Any thoughts?
The Pilgrims sailed to America only for religious freedom...is it true?
Of course it's true. And that brings up the obvious question: If this is our history, our legacy, why is it "not politically correct" to talk about it now?
Reply:i think the questioner is focusing on the line "advancement of the Christian Faith **AND** the honour of our King and Country"
maybe, technically, you have a point. But in actuality, they bounced around Europe trying to get up the money and sponsorship to get out because they were persecuted by other supposed Christians. I don't recall the details, but I assume from the compact that King James eventually gave them the boats and they sailed in mutual interest - theirs and England's.
Even though they accepted the King's boats and terms, their primary motivation was to flee persecution.
EDIT: Ironically, the Puritan's brand of religious freedom was, "You are free to practice your religion in another settlement."
I can accept such self-segregation today (people move to Montana, set up a community on private property and kick people out who violate whatever 'norm.' Whatever. Good for them. There's plenty of other places to live.) But in colonial America, getting banished was usually a death sentence unless an Indian tribe took you in, which was unusual.
Because of early America's experiences with religious persecution in Europe AND in early settlements, we have the first Amendment prohibiting a state establishment or endorsement of a religion.
Reply:I'm sure not only religious freedom. Maybe even for a better life or land.
Reply:The pilgrims weren't the only ones who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower -- while the pilgrims' goal *was* religious freedom, the goal of the "strangers" was financial gain for themselves and the crown.
Reply:thats great, but who cares, does that make them right?
Reply:Given that the Compact was a political document, I would not think that it would be the most accurate source for motivations. I'd have to do quite a bit of research to form an accurate opinion.
Reply:They were kicked out of England for being pains in the asses.
Reply:The Pilgrims were religious zealots that came here to have a safe place to practice their cult, as Europe had had enough of them.
Europe also sent over all of their criminals and homeless, because they didn't want them, either.
Regardless, this group of people, as a whole, later framed the Declaration of Independence. This declaration had absolutely nothing to do with Pilgrims. And this country was not founded by Pilgrims, either. They were just another boatload, among many.
Reply:Nowhere in the United States' Constitution is church and state separated. Freedom of religion is guaranteed, and at the drafting of the constitution, it was agreed that there is a God. Our country is founded upon faith and freedom; to deny either is UNAMERICAN!
Reply:At that moment in time, the Puritans who thought they were the right type of Christians were practising their religion under the rule of Oliver Cromwell but when he wasn't the leader no more, the Church of England changed. They didn't agree with the Church so then they moved. Most went to The Netherlands but after some year there they felt that it wasn't home and went in search of a home that they could call their own.
They had heard of a new land (USA) and decided to go there. They landed in new England and from their settled where they lived and now their descendants live there with other people who have left their countries and have decided to move. Also, many years ago in the UK some people went to the Americas in search of the American Dream.
Puritans did go to USA for religious freedom but they weren't on the run although some people were for supporting Cromwell who was hated by all of the non-Puritans.
I hope I helped!
Reply:the Pilgrims were aiming for Virginia?
wow, was their aim off.
Reply:Not exactly.
Among other things, the pilgrims that got here were part of a particularly Puritanical branch of Christinity. So puritanical that they generally made themselves unwelcome wherever they went. Kind of like modern-day televangelists. We're stuck with that legacy.
Reply:If they had their way, Shakespeare would have been a chimney sweep.
Reply:A written mission statement may or may not mirror all the actual motivations involved.
Is it likely the Pilgrims mirrored some sort of Christian foundation along the lines of religious freedom?
Yes (my view).
Reply:The first colony of English-speaking Europeans was Jamestown, settled in 1609 for trade, not religious freedom. Fewer than half of the 102 Mayflower passengers in 1620 were "Pilgrims" seeking religious freedom. The secular United States of America was formed more than a century and a half later. If tradition requires us to return to the views of a few early settlers, why not adopt the polytheistic and natural beliefs of the Native Americans, the true founders of the continent at least 12,000 years earlier?
Most of the religious colonial governments excluded and persecuted those of the "wrong" faith. The framers of our Constitution in 1787 wanted no part of religious intolerance and bloodshed, wisely establishing the first government in history to separate church and state.

George Smith was most energetic of the Smith's clan. u get it, then star a bit?
The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair. The author said he could handle the story tactfully. The book appeared. It said, "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock."
