1. The natural resources of the New England Colonies included fish, whales, trees and furs.The natural resources of the Southern Colonies included rich farm land, forests and fish. Middle colonies: Cattle, grain, fish, lumber and iron. There was also fur, whales and oil.
2.The Mayflower Compact was important because it allowed the Pilgrims to freely commit as equals to their new society and Jesus Christ, and provided just and equal laws that could be built on, agreed to and enforced. The Mayflower Compact is an important document as proof that when men join together for the good of all and commit themselves to a lasting covenant, far reaching goals can be attained.
3. The purpose of the Navigation Acts was to strengthen England and make it richer. These laws were that only ships built in England or the colonies could carry goods to and from the colonies. The other law was that any ship carrying European goods to America, first had to stop in England.

What Strange Aberrational Idea Of History Did You Have As A Child?
Don't ask me why, but as a child I always believed that the Pilgrims' ship (the Mayflower) was some sort of cruise ship. Maybe I was sleeping during class but I truly believed the Pilgrims sailed from Europe to Plymouth rock on a ship the size of the Queen Mary 2. Moreover, I pictured the first Thanksgiving as this catered in-door resort banquet with sumptuous turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and plenty of pumpkin pie.

This was my daughter's history aberration. She must have been about 5 or 6 years old, and influenced by a room in our house where many family photos, some 100 years old, are hung. We noticed that she'd talk about the people in the pictures as being in "the black and white days". I told her that my great-grandmother (in a picture) looked like my sister. "But Aunt Janie is in color," she commented. I thought that sounded odd. When her grandparents came to visit, she asked them about something when they were in the black and white days. It hit me that she really thought that people were in black and white back then. I told her that people had color back then, only the cameras couldn't make color. She got really upset -- blinking and trembling. It was like I had told her the world was only in her imagination.

Reply:I remember the first time I heard the story of how airplane flight began, and "learned" about the Wright Brothers. Unfortunately, I thought that they were called the "Right Brothers" because they were the first people to be "right" about how to fly. I still remember a snide comment by the nun who taught 3rd grade when I put that erroneous name down as an answer on her test.

Reply:I believe that everyone in the colonies wanted to be free of Britain. I also believe that the members of the 2nd Continental Congress where very conservative.
Until I leaned about Ben Franklin.

Reply:Interesting question! Up until college I thought the Nazis put up the Berlin Wall. I thought we fought the Nazis in WW I and the Japanese in WW II. Its amazing how forgotten WW I has become. Also amazing how bad our high schools are at teaching history. I love the subject now.

What's the name of the store that won't decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving?
I seen it on the news the other day, this one particular department store refuses to rush the Christmas season. They have signs up throughout the store that say stuff like "Santa didn't come on the Mayflower" and "Let's talk turkey first, then we'll talk about Christmas." They want to celebrate the holidays in their proper order. I think it's great! What do you all think about it, and does anyone know what the name of it is and where it's at?

Another question with genealogy. When I was in high school I lived with a genealogist. She helped take care of me. Anyways, I really didn't pay much attention but she told my dad's side, the last name, she traced them to them Mayflower. That were relatives. I never asked any questions or got paperwork but it explained what my grandfather said to me. Anyways I moved after high school and she moved to another state. We lost contact.
Another one of my releatives either got paper work from the archives or had a genealogist do the tree.
Anyways the results say two different things. I'm having my relative send me the copies.
I think I already found the error but I'm waiting for the copies of the papers to be sent. My relatives paper list the wrong Charles and that is not my gg grandmothers name. Also the newpaper article which has been passed down the famliy conderdicks this too.
Also is this normal for genealogist to conerdick each other?

Many people are insulted, if you question the source of their conclusion. Good researchers are happy to say what record they used to "prove" the research. Different types of sources vary in how reliable they are. A court document is more likely accurate than a biography, for instance. Or, someone takes the easy route (like a published book), and makes no effort to see if the book is accurate. In early days, it was more common to use the same name in a family, and have 3 or 4 Charles.. and it can be hard to sort which one belongs to the record. Even well known genealogists can be lazy or wrong, as I learned on one of my lines. And she was a professional.
It really taught me a lot to see the contradiction, and work it through.
The other frequent pitfall is new researchers, who take family tradition as gospel. Many researchers are more concerned with finding a prestigious line, than being accurate. And very insulted if you see the mistake.
Anytime someone asks you "what is your source for that?", be happy, not insulted. Comparing notes (especially in disputed conclusions) is a great check and balance.
